Background
Telecommunications and Data Communications represents one of Israel's most innovative industry sectors in both technological development and marketing. This sector is the largest product group in the non-military electronics area.
Israeli companies have created products now integrated into world-wide systems, including switching, transmission, access networks, satellite services, xDSL, wireless communications, cellular mobile radio, paging and private radio services, as well as regional and metropolitan networks. In particular, Israel is a world leader in wireless technology, thanks to systems developed originally for military aircraft and guided missiles.
For 1997, combined industry sales exceeded $2.8 billion, with $2.337 billion of that in exports. Civilian tele/data communications made up 41% of all electronics exports in 1997. There are some 6,950 employees in the tele/data communications sector, and sales per employee exceed an estimated $135,000.
