Sydney’s B-Line buses are trialling potentially life-saving technology to help avoid accidents before they happen.

The Mobileye safety devices have been fitted to 38 vehicles and use audio and visual alerts.

The trial comes as the New South Wales Government releases shocking vision of just how close some pedestrians are cutting it.

In dashcam video recorded in July, a bus collides with a pedestrian at a Darlinghurst intersection.

The walker, who emerges from behind a garbage truck, was on his phone at the time and did not have the right of way.

“We’ve got too many pedestrians walking around with mobile phones doing the wrong thing and this gives the bus driver every opportunity to save that life and alternatively also keep passengers safe,” Transport Minister Andrew Constance said.

The trial of Mobileye will run until next year.
