Dragon boat racing originated in China more than 2,000 years ago and was preserved as a folk ritual which has now become the fastest growing water sport on earth. A dragon boat team consists of 20 paddlers, a drummer who sits in the front and helps to synchronize the rowing by the beat of his drum and a captain who maneuvers the boat from the back, the entire crew works together as one in attempt to be first across the finish line. This month Israel will be home to the first ever Dragon Boat Israel Festival on May 17th -18th 2012, on the Sea of Galilee. One thousand participants from Israel and abroad will compete in the race, with thousands expected to attend as spectators.

Everyone, from almost any age and ability is encouraged to take part in this exciting, adrenaline pumped sport, in a fun competitive atmosphere, conveying a strong sense of team spirit and satisfaction. The colorful festival will also include fun activities for all the family, including: live music, drumming workshops, an arts and crafts fair, juggling performances and even bouncy castles. All in all the festival offers a great opportunity for Israelis and tourists to enjoy a fun-packed family day out in the sun while being a part of Israel’s history in the first ever Dragon Boat Israel Festival.
