As reported in Port2PortTotal cargo moved in 2010 through Ben Gurion international airport was 294,000 tons compared to 265,000 tons in 2009, up 11%. The increase followed a drop of 18% in 2009 and 6% in 2008

A comparative report issued by Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)and presented last week to Israel Katz, Minister of Transport and Road Safety show that total cargo moved in 2010 through Ben Gurion international airport was 294,000 tons compared to 265,000 tons in 2009, up 11%.

The increase followed a drop of 18% in 2009 and 6% in 2008. Dani Morag, chief economist at the civil aviation authority noted that the sharp decline in cargo movements in 2008-2009 was the result of the global recession as well as the decline in agricultural export by air.

The report noted that during 2010 the market share of air cargo moving by passenger aircraft was up to 49% whereas the market share of air cargo moving by freighters operated by El Al & CAL was, for the first time, below 50%.

At the beginning of 2011, the Israeli freighter fleet consisted  of 4 freighters compared to two at the beginning of 2010.
