Australian Pilgrimage to the Holy Land soars

A recent in depth tourism survey conducted by the Israel Ministry of Tourism for 2010, exposed a significant growth in the number of pilgrims from Australia who made their special journey to Israel -the Holy Land.

According to the survey, pilgrimage accounted for 60% of the Australian visitors profile in 2010- doubling up the figures compared to those of previous year.

75% of Australian visitors to Israel defined themselves as Christians from various denominations, with the majority being Catholic.

For the majority of travelers this is their first visit to the holy land with 62% of travelers making their bookings through an organized tour.

 Christian tourism is the main target market for the Israel Ministry of Tourism. Many new marketing initiatives have been recently launched to showcase the unique experience of visiting the holy land, such as the new Holy land you tube channel,

 Israel is the place to discover the cradle of Christianity. Pilgrims frequently describe their pilgrimage to the Holy Land as a life-changing experience and a unique spiritual adventure.

Most Journeys to Israel begin in the charming old city of Jerusalem,  taking the Via Dolorosa ,passing the Stations of the Cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the ancient site of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. The second most visited are the Christian holy sites around the Sea of Galilee.
